Camping at Old Federal Campground - Lake Sidney Lanier, GA
We started the 2017 camping season off right by staying at Old Federal campground in Flowery Branch, GA. This campground has a water view at every site, truly amazing views. It was opening weekend with no rain in the forecast, so we packed up in our New Jayco Jayflight and hit the road!
This campground is definitely geared towards units that have their own toilets, although there is no sewer hookups, because there are only three bath houses and you will really have to plan a poo since they aren't exactly close by. Plan for a 10 minute walk or a hop in the truck to make bathroom runs if you aren't so lucky to have your own potty.
When I booked this trip a few weeks ago, I got the last available site and was thinking maybe something wasn't too appealing about it since it was available. We got lucky - site 34 was a back in site that we had to flip around in the cul-de-sac to access, but there was plenty of driveway space and good shade/sun mixture. Not sure if it was the time of year or recent storms, but it sure was a windy spot - we never used the awning due to strong winds. The negative about this site was for some reason there was a lot of traffic turning around in the cul-de-sac; not sure if visitors or potential future campers but it was enough to mention.
I always check out trip Advisor before I book a campground, and some of the complaints were that the camp attendants were snooty, or camp-nazi's... We didn't have any issues, although this is an Army Corp facility and rangers did drive or walk by daily. This also means no alcohol is allowed, and you better follow the rules or someone may say something. There was a good mix of older couples and families, and for the most part everyone was respectful of noise levels (outside of a few noisy dogs occasionally).
We went to the playground and I walked the beach with clean sand. Since this is Georgia and the lake levels have been low, anything outside of the groomed beach is going to be a rocky, red mud type of adventure.
After driving around the few loops, I decided that I really enjoyed our loop because the sites seemed to be the most spacious. Some of the other loops had absolutely amazing views as well though. One of the reviews I read on Tripadvisor said "Views from every site" and that is true! Amazing sunrise and sunset photo opportunities no matter where you're parked.
